Playing online Blackjack, how does it work?

Blackjack is a classic casino card game that blends strategy with a little luck. Because players’ choices directly influence the outcome, it’s especially popular with those who enjoy a more interactive experience. Learn the essentials of the game and how to play in the sections below.

What is Blackjack?

Blackjack is a popular card game where the aim is to have a higher value of cards than the dealer, without going over 21. Players do not compete against each other, so several players can win each round.
Once mainly a land-based casino game, Blackjack has become popular in online casinos in recent years.

The most popular online Blackjack variants

At Holand Casino Online we offer several variants of Blackjack to choose from.

  • Live Blackjack: Players looking for an experience closest to a land-based casino can opt for Live Casino Blackjack, with a real dealer interacting with players in real-time, online. Multiple players can play simultaneously.
  • RNG Blackjack: An online Blackjack with no dealer, in which the cards are distributed using a random number generator. Each game is unique to each player; this is a single-person game.
  • Blackjack VZN: A multi-player RNG Blackjack, in which several players can simultaneously play on a table with no dealer.
  • All Bets Blackjack: A Blackjack variant with only one seat. This seat can be occupied by many players, and each player makes an individual action. This often has different side bets than the standard 7-seat Blackjack.

In general, Live Blackjack games are multi-player and RNG games are single-player. One exception is Blackjack VZN, where multiple players join the same table while cards are dealt by an RNG instead of a human dealer.

There are no available games.
Basic rules and gameplay
Basic rules and gameplay

To start a game of Blackjack, players first take a seat at a table. Once at least one seat is occupied, the dealer deals one face-up card to each player, then to themselves, followed by a second card to each player.

Card values

  • Number cards (2–10) = face value
  • Jacks, Queens, Kings = 10
  • Ace = 1 or 11

A hand containing an Ace with two possible values is a soft hand (e.g. Ace + 7 = soft 18). The value changes as the player takes more cards, and once one of the values exceeds 21, the hand becomes hard. A player with an Ace and a 10-point card as their first two cards has a Blackjack.

Players may hit (take more cards) until they stand (stop taking cards) or bust (go over 21). A bust is an automatic loss for the player.

Examples of hand values

  • Ace + King = 21. This is a Blackjack.
  • 2 + 7 = 9
  • 5 + Jack + 3 = 18
  • Ace + 5 = soft 16, so the two values are 6 and 16
  • Ace + 5 + 8 = 14
  • 7 + 5 + 9 = 21. This is not a Blackjack because it is not an Ace with a single 10-point card. It is an excellent hand, however.

Player actions and dealer rules

Players act from left to right. After all players finish, the dealer acts. Dealers follow strict house rules and must draw cards until reaching 17 or above. At Holland Casino Online, we have a house rule that the dealer stands on soft 17, which is favourable to players.

  • If a player’s hand value is higher than the dealer’s, they win.
  • If hand values are equal, it’s a push and the bet is returned.
  • If the dealer busts, all remaining players win.
  • If the dealer has a Blackjack, all players lose (unless they also have a Blackjack and took insurance).

Blackjack payouts: At Holland Casino Online, Blackjack pays 3:2 (a €10 bet wins €15 plus the original €10). Some casinos pay out less for Blackjacks, so keep an eye out for that when choosing where to play.

Dealer cards: 2, 5, 9, 4, so a hand value of 20.

Five active players:

  1. Player 1: 7 + King = 17 → loses to 20
  2. Player 2: 2 + King + Queen = 22 → busts
  3. Player 3: Queen + King = 20 → push
  4. Player 4: 7 + 9 + 5 = 21 → wins €5 on a €5 bet
  5. Player 5: 10 + Ace = Blackjack → wins €30 on a €20 bet

In our Live Casino, Holland Casino Online uses eight decks with continuous shuffle machines. RNG Blackjack games may use a different number of decks.

Blackjack strategies & tips

For beginning players, the following 10 guidelines may be helpful.

  1. Always consider your hand versus the dealer’s hand. Don’t make decisions based on only your hand.
  2. Always stand on hard 17 or higher.
  3. Always hit on soft 17.
  4. If the dealer shows a 4, 5 or 6, stand on all hands 12 and higher.
  5. Double on 11 unless the dealer shows an Ace.
  6. Double on 10 unless the dealer shows a 10 or Ace.
  7. Never split a pair of 5s or a pair of 10s.
  8. Always split pairs of Aces and 8s.
  9. If a dealer shows an 8 or higher, hit on a pair of 7s. For 7 and lower, split.
  10. Never take insurance; the odds are not good for players.

Once you are comfortable with the basics, we recommend looking up more advanced strategies through reputable websites that calculate the odds of each action.

Game round: Complete cycle of play, from when the first player gets a card to when the dealer finishes and all bets are collected and winnings distributed.

Card value: The number of points a single card is worth.

Hand value: The value of all your cards together.

Hit: Take another card. In a land-based casino, you can request a card by tapping a finger on the table, or saying ‘hit’ to the dealer.

Stand: Stop taking cards. Once you stand, you cannot make changes to your hand.

Double: Double your bet before hitting and requesting a third card. Generally, you want to double if you have a strong starting hand and/or the dealer has a very weak card showing.

Split: If you have a pair (two cards of the same value) you can split them into two hands. At Holland Casino Online, if you split Aces, you can only take one more card for each Ace. If you get a 10 on an Ace after splitting, it is considered as 21, not a Blackjack. Dealers are not allowed to split hands.

Push: If the dealer has a hand value of 17 to 21, and the player has the same hand value, this is a tie. This results in a push, in which the player gets his bet returned to him – neither player nor dealer win.

Bust: If a player or dealer’s hand value is 22 or higher, they have busted. This is an instant loss.

Insurance: If the dealer is showing an Ace, players are given an option for insurance. If you accept it, an amount equal to half your ante bet is placed separately on the table. If the dealer then has Blackjack, you are given the value of your ante bet and insurance returned to you, so you do not lose your original bet. If the dealer does not have a Blackjack, you lose the ante bet.

Blackjack (hand): A hand with an Ace and a 10-point card.

Blackjack (game): A classic casino card game in which players aim to beat a dealer’s points value.

House: Another name for the casino. The dealer represents the house at a Blackjack table.

House rules: Rules specific to a casino, which may not be shared with other casinos.

Number cards: Cards with values of 2 through 10.

Face value: The points a number card is worth.

Face cards: Jack, Queen and King. They are each worth 10.

Soft hand: A hand with an Ace that has two theoretical values.

Hard hand: A hand with only one value.

Surrender: Players can choose to surrender any hand, but they most often do if they have a very weak starting hand versus a dealer’s strong hand, such as 16 versus a Jack. Unusual in European casinos, this option is not supported by HCO.

Bet behind: If a seat is occupied by another player, a second player can choose to ‘bet behind. This allows the second player to make ante and side bets on the first player’s hand. The second player cannot take their own actions; only the first player chooses to hit, stand, etc.

Ante bet: The main bet that a player must make in order to participate in Blackjack.

Side bet: Side bets are wagers players can make in addition to the ante bet. A player must first make an ante bet before placing any side bets

21+3: A side bet that pays out winnings if the player’s first two cards combined with the dealer’s first card form a poker hand.

Top 3: Very similar to 21+3, but fewer poker hands are accounted for and the payouts for those are higher.

Player’s Pair: A side bet on whether the player’s first two cards form a pair.

Dealer Pair: A side bet on whether the dealer’s first two cards form a pair.

10-Card Charlie: A player’s hand which has 10 cards without busting. This is extremely rare.

Golden Chips: Bonus chips awarded by Holland Casino Online, which can be used in Live Casino games.
